During his internship at Sensetence, Luis had the opportunity to work on various projects and take on responsibility early on. He is studying mathematics at the University of Augsburg and was part of the team from May 18 to August 21, gaining a wealth of new experiences – both technical and personal – during that time. He gained insights into the day-to-day operations of a software company and was able to apply and expand his knowledge directly in a practical setting. Here, Luis himself reflects on his time at Sensetence:
Part Of The Crew, Not Just On The Sidelines
During my internship, I had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects. Among other things, I was involved in the development of the new Sensetence website, sensetence.ai, and also had the chance to work on a production-ready application as part of a client project.
In addition, I had the opportunity to help organize a monthly networking meeting on the topic of AI in business processes. I also cataloged, structured, and documented internal company operations to make existing processes more transparent and accessible.
I especially liked that I wasn’t just an observer – I was able to get directly involved and work on tasks that are actually used within the company and by clients.
Learned Lots of New Things – Both Technically And Personally
During my time at Sensetence, I was able to significantly expand my knowledge of the PHP ecosystem and, in particular, Symfony. I worked extensively with databases, APIs, and CI/CD pipelines. I also had the opportunity to learn a great deal about caching, reverse proxies, server infrastructure, and Dockerization. Through my work on the new website, I also became familiar with the Nuxt and Vue ecosystems.
The tools, technologies, and methods I have worked with include, among others, PHP, Symfony, Nuxt, Vue, TypeScript, Git, Scrum, WordPress, Docker, Doctrine, SQL, SSH, CI/CD pipelines, Cron, and Meilisearch.
What was new to me, above all, were professional quality assurance processes and collaborating with other developers in a productive environment. The structured approach to working with tickets, code reviews, and staging and deployment processes immediately resonated with me.
What I enjoyed most was deploying to production or staging systems – either automatically via pipelines or directly via SSH. It just feels great when your own code is actually running on a production system after development and testing.
I also learned a great deal from the organizational tasks. They gave me valuable experience in interacting professionally with different people and helped me communicate more efficiently, listen better, and provide constructive feedback. At the same time, I was able to learn a great deal from the experience and expertise of the professionals around me.
A Strong Team and Special Memories
I really enjoyed the team dynamics and the work environment at Sensetence. I was quickly integrated from the start, taken seriously, and given the opportunity to take on responsibility early on. I particularly appreciated the open communication and the team’s willingness to share knowledge and help one another. I also found the agile work approach to be very beneficial.
On a personal level, the Sensetence summer event was definitely one of the best experiences of my internship. However, my biggest technical “aha” moment came when Ralf reviewed my code and showed me how to drastically speed up a program with just a few targeted changes and a deep understanding of software architecture. That moment made it clear to me once again just how much a difference experience and a good understanding of the underlying structures can make.
As I say goodbye, I’d like to say thank you above all else: Thank you so much for welcoming me so quickly and so warmly. I had a wonderful time and was absolutely thrilled by how much I was actually able to contribute and help shape things.
Especially when compared to some of my classmates, for whom the internship was more like a months-long detour into making coffee, I feel like I took on a lot of responsibility at Sensetence and really made a difference.
I’m taking away an incredible amount of knowledge and practical experience from this time – probably more than I could have learned in any lecture over the same period.
Thank you for the wonderful time, the trust, and all the opportunities you have given me!
